Screed Operator Responsibilities
- Operate the screed on an asphalt paving machine to achieve the desired thickness and smoothness of asphalt surfaces.
- Manipulate levers to control asphalt flow, screed angle, and depth for consistent mat thickness and smoothness to maintain a consistent and even surface.
- Continuously observe material flow and adjust settings to achieve final surface quality according to project plans.
- Work closely with the paver operator and other crew members to maintain production, quality standards and to ensure efficient and effective paving operations.
- Perform pre-shift inspections, clean, and conduct basic maintenance inspections on the screed and paving machine.
- Adjust screed settings and extensions to achieve desired width, depth, slope, and smooth finish, often using stakes and levels.
- Adhere to all safety procedures, wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and ensure a safe work environment, often near traffic or in extreme temperatures.
- Ability to run screed on Leeyboy class paver and high deck highway class paver
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience running screed
- Strong understanding and use of electronics and joint matchers
- Understand the operations and process of running paver
- Knowledge of the technologies of the grade and slope controls, vibratory control, extensions and cut-off shoes
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work outdoors in various conditions
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment upkeep
- Good communication and teamwork
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation; CDL a plus especially with tanker endorsement
